MARIA ROSA JORGE (nee Ricardo)
The family announces with sorrow her death at the Nipigon District Memorial Hospital – Long Term Care on February 9, 2024 at the age of 90. Beloved wife of the late Esmeraldino Jorge and dearest mother of: Ana Nichols (Ronald) of Thunder Bay, Fernando Jorge (Yvette) of Beardmore and Filipe Jorge of Beardmore.
She will be sadly missed by her four grandchildren: Terry Parise, Cheri Parise, Destiny Belleau, Lesley Jorge, and fondly remembered by Eric and Kelly Nichols.
She is also survived by her six great-grandchildren: Isaac Parise, Abby-Lou Parise, Greg Parise, Trystan Goodman, Maddie Yerxa and Delilah Houghton.
Pre-deceased by her husband of 60 years: Esmeraldino Jorge; her sisters: Isabel, Emilia, Leopoldina and Maria; her brother: Manuel; her granddaughter: Elizabeth Godinho and her son-in-law: Joaquin Godinho.
Mom and Dad, along with two children, set out in April 1970 headed to Canada in search of a better life and opportunity for their family. They made their way to Beardmore where family members awaited and started a new life. In 1974, they welcomed a second son, and their family was complete.
Through hard work and perseverance, they made a good life and instilled in their children the importance of hard work, responsibility and community involvement and help.
After many years in Canada, they decided to retire back in Portugal and enjoyed many years together travelling and reconnecting with family and friends.
In 2016, after the death of her husband, Maria moved back to Canada to be with her children and grandchildren and enjoyed many adventures from the solitude of camping to the adventures of trapping and hunting with her boys.
Eventually, dementia took its toll and she moved to long term care in Nipigon Hospital where she received the absolute top level of care.
The family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to everyone that helped with her care over the years and in particular to: Brenda Goodman, medical staff in Nipigon Hospital as well as Nursing and PSW staff, Recreation Therapist, Dietary and Cleaning staff in Long-Term Care Unit (Nipigon Hospital). A funeral ceremony for Maria will be held at the Community Baptist Church (Beardmore) on Wednesday, February 14th at 1:00pm with Pastor Rick Mikesh officiating. The interment will be held at Beardmore Pinegrove Cemetery. Donations to the Nipigon District Memorial Hospital – Long Term Care Fund would be appreciated.
