George Swan passed away on May 29, 2018 at the Geraldton District Hospital. He was 85 years of age.
Dad was born in Kipling Sask, and was predeceased by his parent’s Peter and Caroline, as well as his siblings Steven, William, Kay, Helen and Philip.
He is survived by his wife of 64 years Doreen, his daughter Joy Hall (husband Peter and daughter Katherine) and his son Steven (wife Jane and daughters Jenna and Lanae). He will also be missed by his close sister-in-law Janet Bryan.
He grew up in Port Arthur where he was very active in the football and hockey community. He moved his family to Nipigon where he continued to play hockey and was employed in the local mill. His final move was to Longlac where he was employed at Weldwood and was one of its earliest employees.
Upon retirement he became known for his blueberry picking. Once he had picked enough to provide himself with a cup every day until the next year, he was known to knock on doors of others who were no longer able to pick, and give the rest away. George was a great gardener and enjoyed golf in the summer, and trapper in the winter. He and his wife were very active in the Longlac Senior’s Center.
The last few months of his life were difficult for him, with his failing health. The family would like to acknowledge the continued support, in particular during this time of “mom” Elaine. Also we would like to thank the staff at the Geraldton Hospital, and many friends who visited him during those last two weeks.
A Celebration of George’s Life will be held on Saturday June 16,2018 from 1pm until 3pm at the Longlac Seniors Centre. If anyone wishes to make a donation in his memory, the family would appreciate they be made to the Longlac Senior’s Centre or any Junior Sports program.
