Mark Fortier Obituary

Mr. Mark Laurent Fortier

The family announces with sorrow his death at the Geraldton District Hospital on July 11, 2018 at the age of 58.  Beloved husband of Barbara and dearest father of: Gwen O'Nabigon (John O'Nabigon) of Ginoogaming First Nation and Jason Chapais of Ginoogaming First Nation. He is survived by his brother and sister: Sylvie Fortier of Geraldton and Luc Fortier (Natalie) of Thunder Bay. He is pre-deceased by his sister: Michelle Sharp, his niece: Stephanie Fortier and his parents: Jean-Marie & Marie Fortier. Mark was born and raised in Geraldton with 3 siblings, Michelle, Luc and Sylvie, by his two loving parents: Jean-Marie & Marie Fortier. In December 1993, he married his beautiful wife, Barbara, in Geraldton. She had two children: Gwen O'Nabigon and Jason Chapais, who Mark accepted and raised as his own. They eventually moved to Ginoogaming First Nation where he worked as a head carpenter then changed jobs to the chipper operator as the sawmill was running in 1997. Mark lived a fulfilled life as a hunter, trapper and loved his trout fishing and ice fishing during the winter season. Mark was very proud to be a grandfather to Jordan, Jake, Tyler, Charly, Jersey, Jeniya and Drea and was especially proud to be called Baba Mark by his great-grandchildren Harper and Ella Rose. Mark loved and took part in the native culture. He was proud to be a part of his community, Ginoogaming First Nation. He helped to prepare the pow wow grounds in building of the original arbor. He was so proud of his work, when asked to do a job, he always made sure it was going to last. The family would like to extend a huge thank you to Chief & council of Ginoogaming First Nation, Geraldton District Hospital staff and Mark's personal nurses who helped him in his last month here on earth. Mark will be sadly missed by his son: Jason Chapais, his daughter: Gwen O'Nabigon, his son-in-law: John O'Nabigon, his grandchildren: Jordan and Camille, Jake and Amanda, Tyler O'Nabigon, Charly and Byanka, Jersey, Gwen, Jeniya and Drea and he will be especially missed by his 2 great-grandchildren: Harper and Ella Rose O'Nabigon as well as by his nieces and nephews: Patricia, Samantha, Jackie, Melanie and Bryan Fortier. Friends will be received at 106 Spruce Street (GFN) on Tuesday, July 17th as of 3:00pm. A funeral mass for Mark will be held at St. John the Baptist R.C. Church (Longlac) on Wednesday, July 18th at 10:30am with Father Hugo Tremblay officiating. The interment will be held at Longlac Cemetery.
