Welcome to the memorial page for

Viola May Byerley

December 23, 2017

The family of Mrs. Viola May Byerley sadly announce her death at the Geraldton District Hospital on December 23 2017.  Vi was born in St. Catharines, Ontario on October 9 1924 to Amos and Sadie Samms.  She came to Geraldton as a child with her family and was a life-long resident.  She served her country during World War Two, being stationed in Ottawa working on the ledgers of soldiers.  When she returned to Geraldton, she married her love Herb on June 27 1946.  Vi dedicated her life to her family, raising her children and keeping a loving, happy home.  There was always plenty of laughter at Grandma’s house.  Vi was always willing to help others and her house was always open to family and friends.  She loved watching her boys play hockey and in her later years, enjoyed talking with her grandchildren and great grandchildren about all of their pursuits.  Grandma always knew exactly what was going on with everyone and always said “I love all my kids”.  Vi’s wish was to stay at home as long as possible and was able to do this for many years with the loving care of her daughter Cheryl.

Vi leaves a legacy of children, grandchildren and great grandchildren who will cherish her memory.  She is survived by her children: Jack (Susan), Bob (Linda), Judy, Dave (Diane), Rick and Cheryl as well as daughter-in-law Sheryn; grandchildren Jeffrey (Vicki), Jason, Mike, Amy (Rob), Brian (Krystal), Bobby (Louise), Kevin (Linda), Mandy (Joe), and Chad; great-grandchildren Ashley, Kayla, Taylor, Connor, Ashley, Sara, Gabby, Alyssa, Nathan and Hunter.  She is also survived by her special niece and nephew Donna and Jim Smith who loved her very much.  Many nieces, nephews and extended family also survive her.

Vi is predeceased by her husband Herb, whom she missed deeply following his death, her son in law Bob Ruddick, her siblings Donny, Gordon and Dorothy, parents Amos and Sadie, in-laws Jack and Fedelia Byerley.  She is also pre-deceased by several brothers and sisters-in-laws.

Vi will be cremated and a private family service will follow this Spring.

Vi’s family would like to thank the Physicians and Nurses of the Geraldton District Hospital for her care in her final days as well as the Home Care Nurses and Superior North EMS for their support.  A special thank you to Donna and Jim Smith for your help to Cheryl and Vi these past few years to make her wishes a reality.
