Alfredo (Fred) F. Medeiros - It is with great sadness that the family of Fred Medeiros announce his peaceful passing In Hornepayne on December 18, 2020 at the age of 88.
Fred was born October 21, 1932 in Ribeira Grande, Sao Miguel, Azores, Portugal. He was one of seven children of Noah and Ambrozina Medeiros. He worked on the family farm as a young boy looking after the cattle. As a young man, Fred had a stint in the Portuguese Army before immigrating to Canada.
Fred was hired by Canadian National Railway and was sent to Northern Ontario where he met the love of his life, Laura Taylor. They married in 1961 and eventually settled in Hornepayne where they raised their family.
Fred was an avid gardener and was well known for his prize-winning vegetables. He was able to grow tomatoes, corn and other crops in the harsh and unforgiving northern climate. As such, he never failed to amaze his neighbours when presenting them with gifts from his harvests.
Although Fred grew up in a temperate environment, he always enjoyed living in Northern Ontario and stated many times that he never wished to live anywhere else. Fred enjoyed hunting, ice fishing, blueberry picking and all the activities that come with living there. He also enjoyed his trips to the Azores to visit his relatives.
Fred bought a camp on Larkin Lake and spent all of his summers there for the past 30 years. Fred enjoyed having his kids and their families visit there and share what he called his little piece of heaven. He loved the clean air, the breeze off the lake, the views, his animal friends and of course his large and bountiful gardens. Most of all, he loved the freedom and roaming around on the bush roads on his ATV.
Fred will be greatly missed by his loving wife of nearly sixty years Laura (Taylor) along with his children; Lucia (Steve), Raymond, Amber (Dave), Laura (Dino) and Noah (Melissa). He also leaves behind 10 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. Fred also leaves behind many family members in Portugal and Toronto.
Due to COVID-19 there is no service at this time. A private family memorial is planned for summer of 2021.
The Gardener
"Trowel in hand he stood there proud,
Of tomatoes that he had sown,
Of zucchinis, carrots, beans and herbs,
All of which he'd grown.
Think of me next time you stand,
Where a veggie garden grows,
For there I'll be in sun and earth,
And in the wind that blows."
