Calvin 'Buddy' Onabigon Obituary

Calvin Onabigon “Buddy”

The family announces with sorrow his death at the Thunder Bay Regional Hospital on January 1st, 2023 at the age of 55 years.  He is survived by brothers Sheldon and Douglas and sister Marsha, Mason, Carter and Lilyanna; his nieces Jamie, Madison, Ernestine, Chasity, Serenity, Courtney and Megan; his nephews Sam, Jonias, Serge, Sheldon Jr. and Brandon.

“Buddy” Calvin Onabigon was predeceased by his parents Johhny and Sheila Finlayson, both sets of grandparents and his nephew Eli.

The nickname Buddy was given to him by his Uncle Kenny. Buddy was true to his name. He was a friend to all. Despite the challenges he faced, he opened his door to all especially those less fortunate than him and gave what little he had. Everyone who came to his home was welcomed and treated like family.

Buddy was the oldest child of Johnny and Sheila. As with most families, the oldest child steps up to help out. Buddy did that for his siblings Sheldon, Douglas and Marsha especially after his parents passed on.

He didn’t have any children of his own but considered Mason his son. From birth to young man, Buddy was there to support and care for Mason and was very proud of the man he had become. Buddy's nephew Jonias was also special to him. Buddy's parents raised him as well as his brothers Sam, Eli and Serge so he was very much a part of their lives. He didn’t get to see his other nephews and nieces as much as he would have like to but he spoke of them often.  Jamie is the oldest granddaughter so that significant to the family.  Sheldon Jr. and Megan came to stay with him when they were older, so he was glad that he was able to get to know them better.

Buddy was raised in a family where your cousins are your brothers and sisters. He was very close to all of them. Whenever they gathered, regardless of the event Buddy was sure to talk of his experiences good or bad but made sure everyone saw the humor in everything.

He loved to cook, and his home was his castle. He was very good at decorating and would always transform a house into a home with his special talents. Buddy will truly be missed by his family and friends.

Friends will be received at 202 Otter Road, Longlake 58 First Nation, on January 11th, 2023 from 4:00 pm.  The funeral ceremony will be held at the St. John the Baptist Church on January 13th, 2023 at 11:00am with Fr. Sebastien officiating.  The interment will be held at the Longlac Cemetery.
