The family announces with sorrow Julia’s death at the Hornepayne District Hospital on September 16, 2023. 3:02 pm, at the age of 79 yrs. Julia was born on July 16, 1944. She loved all her family and was an amazing Anishnaabe craftswoman and artist. She loved to create beautiful handmade birchbark baskets - a tradition that was passed down to her. She loved to crochet and pick berries.
She will be sadly missed by her children Sheila Jacob of Aroland, Norma Mendowegan of Hornepayne, her nephew Fabian Matasawagan of Geraldton, her 15 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren. She is survived by Sheila and Norma. She is predeceased by her late husband James Mendowegan, her baby Catherine, her son James "Jamie" Matasawagan Jr, her daughters Audrey Matasawagan, Judy Majiskan, Loretta Matasawagan, her late sister Francis Matasawagan and late grandson Cyrano Majiskan.
A Funeral Service will take place on September 27, 2023. 2:00 pm at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Church in Aroland with Father Ben Mulenga presiding.
